Junior Surf Coaching

Posted by Administrator on Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Welcome back to the new season - I am excited to be joining up with Titahi Bay this season to help out with surf sport training.

Winter Training: Training kick-starts soon with a few fun winter sessions. These are for anyone in the U11-U14 age groups who are keen to get training, work on their fitness and are considering attending Oceans in February, 2017. These sessions are every Sunday between 3 - 4pm, beginning on Sunday 25 September (you'll need to bring your wetsuit, running shoes and gear, drink bottle, etc).

Summer Training:  Training for the summer will start on the 11 October, first week of term 4. Training will be 5.30pm - 6.30pm Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Training will be for anyone in the age groups U11 - U14 and will be varied across all events.

Oceans 2017:  To attend Oceans 17 this season we have decided that you have to meet the criteria below. This is to ensure that we allow enough time to get prepared. Oceans is a big event and and we consider it a privelege to represent Titahi Bay. Oceans is achievable for anyone to attend and a valuable experience. For more information head to the SLSNZ website or ask families that have attended:

  • Attend a minimum 2 out of the 3 training sessions a week.
  • Be swimming an additional 1 sessions a week, with a squad or on your own.
  • Show commitment to the Nipper carnivals.
We will be looking at commitment for the Oceans training squad at the end of November. It's a long way away but this gives everyone something to think about before the season starts. Training is open to anyone in the U11 - U14 age groups until then so everyone can have a taste for what the training may involve.

Parent Help:  At training sessions we have to meet a ratio on the beach when the athletes are in the water. We need parents helping at every training session to ensure that the athletes are safe and can get the most out of each session. The larger training group will also be splitting up into smaller groups and parents will be required to assist. If there isn't enough parents then training will be affected.

As the season progresses we will have a better understanding of how things will run and some changes may occur. If anyone has any questions about training or is able to assist further with the Oceans squad please get in touch.

See you on the beach,
