PATHWAYS

Whether setting up patrol areas or rescuing in heavy surf, every Lifeguard and Patrol Support knows the powerful motivation of saving or protecting a life.  It is a motivation that marks Surf Life Saving as more than just 'something to do' at the weekend.

When you turn 14 you can sit your Surf Lifeguard Award or your Patrol Support Award and once you have your award there are a range of programmes and other awards you can participate in to develop your skills further.  As a Surf Lifeguard you can also continue being a surf athlete and explore other options like surf boats, powercraft, and surf skis, as well as continuing with your swimming or knee boarding.

Take a look at the diagram below.  If you see pathways that interest you, or your family members, please get in touch via titahibayslsc@gmail.com.

Lifeguard pathways

Whether you want to drive IRBs , be a patrol captain, join the lifeguard schools or eventually become a member of Search And Rescue, the lifeguard pathways offer you everything you need to achive your lifeguarding goals.

Start off with the Online Radio Communications Module, go on to do your Surf First Aid, and IRB crewman's module and the world opens further.

If you enjoy teaching others and sharing your skills we are always on the lookout for new SLGA Instrustors and IRB Driver Instrutors.

For more information go to the SLSNZ site and click on lifesaving.

Sporting pathways

Sporting pathways offer many options from supporting our Nippers as a Nippers coach, or assistant coach, to training our Ocean's and Craft athletes to continuing to compete in your chosen Sport.

At Titahi Bay we have a long history of successful surf boat athletes and continue to hold our own in the senior craft arenas.

Our powercraft section is gathering momentum, and whilst we work to get crews for competitions, many of our drivers and crewpersons help out at competitions and carnivals in the event managment space.

First aid pathways

Any member of our club can complete their surf first aid.

Typically all surf lifeguards and patrol support will be encouraged to do thier Surf First Aid qualification and keep it current.

Events requiring first aid can happen at any time on or off patrol at our beach.

For those with a particular interest in first aid, the Advanced Surf First Aid qualifiction is also something to work towards; this is the equivalent of a (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care) PHEC course, and then there is also the Pain Relief Module.

Officialling pathways

We encourage our parents and caregivers to consider being part of surf through becoming a surf official.

Surf officials have a really important role at all carnivals and competitions and we need to provide a certain number of offiials based on the number of athletes from our club taking part in the event.

With a number of experienced officials in the club and the region you will be mentored and taken care of.  First step in the Surf Official Level 1 qualification that you can then, with some experience upskill to a Level 2.
